Divide This…

So, George W. Bush has won re-election over challenger John Kerry. Although there wasn’t a resolution until the next day, it was certainly faster than what took place four years ago. There were no lawsuits. There were no endless recounts. There was no six-week waiting period for a concession.

Somewhere Between Appeasement and Independence…

This long and seemingly interminable campaign season culminates today when Americans go to the polls to cast votes for the candidates of their choice. Practically every election has been described as the “most important of our time,” but this quadrennial exercise seems to fit that description even more this time.

Once, Twice, Three Times a Circus…

So…did you see the third debate between John Kerry and George W. Bush on Wednesday night? I’m hoping you did. It was by far the best of the three and probably the most tell-tale about both men. I mean, forget the spin. Ignore the sound bites. Discount the commentary from the talking heads of television news. All you needed to see to get an accurate picture of these two men was to see the reply to one question.

Two Down, One to Go…

Return with me now to those days gone by. It is 1992 and the place is Little Rock, Arkansas. It is the first Tuesday in November–Election Day–and the very last daily meeting of the Clinton campaign staff is being led by George Stephanopoulos, James Carville and Paul Begala.

You Only Turn 35 Once…

I expected my thirty-fifth birthday this past Friday to be a pretty standard affair: friends, family, cake. Little did I know, I’d spend my birthday listening to the President of the United States. October 1 was the day after the first Presidential Debate. The President had a performance where many characterized him as “frustrated” and “unprepared.” I found out that he had a campaign stop in Manchester, New Hampshire, at McIntyre Ski Area and I was offered a ticket through a good friend of mine.

Oh, Look, Honey…That Russell Crowe Movie Is On…

The duly elected President of the United States of America took to the prime-time television airwaves Monday night, outlining his five part plan for turning Iraq over to the Iraqi people. This is a speech that the media talked about all weekend, and the importance of it couldn’t be under-estimated. It was so important that the networks get this coverage on the air that NBC’s coverage…oh…wait. NBC didn’t carry the speech. It showed an episode of Fear Factor. A rerun episode, at that.
