Trump Surging in NH??

A new Public Policy Polling survey puts former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in the lead for the 2012 New Hampshire Primary.  No surprise there, yet.  However, the PPP results also show that real estate tycoon and reality television star Donald Trump is in second place and gaining, as Gawker puts it, “Trumpmentum.”

As it stands now, the gap between Romney and The Donald is:
Romney:  27%
Trump:   21%

followed by:
Huckabee:  15%
Gingrich:  13%
Undecided:  12%
Palin:  10%
Paul:  10%
Pawlenty:  4%
Bachmann:  4%
Barbour:  2%
Six points.  Trump is the first person to encroach upon Romney’s status as the presumed front runner.  The problem is, though, I don’t think Trump is remotely serious about getting in this race.
Sure, he’s going through some motions and putting some people in place, but if there’s anything I can say for sure about Trump is that he’s about the Trump brand.  It’s on everything he does: buildings, golf courses, suits, mattresses…even bottled water.  Donald Trump doesn’t do anything that doesn’t directly benefit Donald Trump.  It’s that simple.
The Presidency is about something far bigger than Donald Trump which is why I don’t really think he’s interested in being President.  I can’t picture a man with an ego that enormous putting his assets in a blind trust for four years to become the Commander in Chief.
Additionally, Trump’s numbers are supposedly high with “birthers and Tea Partiers“–the former of which I can believe given his statements on Obama’s birth certificate, and the latter which I have a hard time buying.  Donald Trump and the TEA Party don’t exactly belong together in the same sentence.
Plus, regardless of what anyone says, Trump is not a Republican or Conservative or Libertarian.  I truly believe his politics are directly tied to his business ventures, which would also explain his history of donations to political candidates.
Lastly, I have a problem with this poll.  The sample is 384 New Hampshirites and the Margin of Error is a whopping 5%.  Suffice it to say I don’t put a lot of faith in this poll or the headlines it’s designed to generate.
Is there Trumpmentum?  Perhaps only in the ratings for NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice,” which…oddly enough…should have it’s season finale right around the time that Trump is supposed to announce whether or not he’s running?
Coincidence??
