Treachery, Faith and the Great River…

If you listen to some in the Mainstream Media (MSM–or, “Media Spin Machine” as I prefer to call it) one would think that the Republican party is on the verge of collapse.
The issue at hand? Illegal immigration.
The party is at odds over which course of action is the right course of action. The President and Senators like John McCain (R-AZ) and Mel Martinez (R-FL) tell us that the McCain-Kennedy compromise legislation is the best solution for the issue. However, most voters in the party are diametrically opposed to that legislation and, in my opinion, rightfully so.
To hear each side talk, you’d think the other one is being thoroughly un-American. The party is at odds with itself in one sense. Some describe this legislation as the “Comprehensive Destroy the Republican Party Act of 2007″ and, while it does have the potential to divide the party, it has the same potential to unite the GOP core constituency and give the Republicans a real shot at the White House in 2008.
The story here is not that the party faithful are out of step with el Presidente and the lawmakers in Washington. The story is that they are out of step with us. That’s why you saw 9 of the 10 Republican hopefuls in the Presidential debate last week run as far away from George W. Bush and his Administration as humanly possible.
McCain-Kennedy was dealt a serious blow this week when they could not generate enough votes in the Senate. One might have thought that would be the end of it, but…no. The President is insisting this bill will be signed into law. George W. Bush could grant instant citizenship to 12 million illegal aliens and potentially destroy the GOP’s chances at the White House all with the stroke of a pen.
I have to believe, however, that the people who are the heart and soul of my party will rise up again and say “no.” We’ve done it once before with this bill and we may need to do it again. And we’ll do it again and again and again if we have to.
I have to believe that one of the nine other candidates on that GOP stage will secure our borders.
I have to believe that one of the nine other candidates will go after the businesses hiring illegals.
I have to believe that someone will do what’s right for America, because John McCain doesn’t seem to want to do it.
I have to have faith.
The GOP is not imploding, but its direction is clearly in our hands.

(The title of this posting, “Treachery, Faith and the Great River” is an episode of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine television series and, when I saw the title on the DVD box tonight in my living room, it seemed to sum up the situation for me pretty well.)
