Dems Select Denver for 2008 Party Convention…

Lately, it seems that when I travel there’s some kind of major news in the city I’m in.
When I was in Dallas, Terrell Owens had his OD episode and Byron Nelson also died. (I might add I was also staying at the Four Seasons which hosts the annual Byron Nelson Classic.)
When I was in Atlanta over the Thanksgiving holiday, police had shot and killed a 92 year old grandmother who had fired at police during the execution of a no-knock warrant.
This week, I’m in my second home: Denver, Colorado. I received a phone call from my friend Aaron while drinking my morning coffee. The conversation went something like the paraphrasing below:
Aaron: “Hey, ese…did you hear the big news?”
Me: “No, what big news is this?”
Aaron: “Dude, the Dems selected Denver as the site of their convention in ’08!”
Me: “No way! Wow…see what happens when I get to town?”
Aaron: “I know! So, what do you think?”
Me: “Oh, they completely blew it. Totally the wrong choice.”
And, as much as I love Denver and Colorado, this is the wrong choice…for Democrats, anyway. After the unmitigated failure that was their 2004 convention in Boston, the Dems needed to go back to basics. They were heavily considering both New York City and Denver, but they left out the city that they’ve owned for ages. A city that’s run by organized labor unions and backroom political deals.
New Orleans.
What better way to send a message to the country and to voters that the Democrat party believes in New Orleans by taking their nominating convention to the Big Easy? Democrats have run New Orleans for decades, why not take advantage of that status? OK, so maybe there isn’t the hotel space right now. That’s entirely possible and I freely concede that. However, nothing says that all of the delegates have to stay in New Orleans.
Sure, it wouldn’t be convenient but it would be a tremendous show of support for the region, bringing in millions of dollars to area business. And there’s plenty of Union business in New Orleans, so that would meet the Democrat agenda.
I know what you’re thinking. Why am I bothering to pick on the Unions? Well, it’s because the Democrats are trying to strong-arm the Denver hotel industry:

But Denver’s bid was shot through with holes from the start. The first technical submission was greeted with dismay by party regulars; revised bids were better. Labor unions threatened to balk unless Denver began to unionize its hotels; others wanted to extract compromises from the DNC and the state about union participation. The DNC worried about whether Denver could raise the $50 million necessary to stage the marquee event for the ’08 Dem nominee. Promises by out of state governors to raise millions were greeted skeptically.

So, Denver almost wasn’t selected but Dean went with it anyway, predicated on support from the big labor unions. The GOP supposedly being in bed with big business is criminal according to Libs, but the Dems working with organized thuggery is absolutely fine. I love it.
Folks in Denver, prepare to have your world infringed up on like you’ve never seen before. This poorly-conceived boondoggle will turn your city on its ear and make your life miserable the entire week.
Boston will have been a walk in the park compared to this.
