“Senate in the Balance…”

I’ve been hearing and seeing headlines all day that say the Democrat majority in the upcoming Senate hangs in the balance.
Wny? Well, it’s because South Dakota senator Tim Johnson has been rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition. Johnson, a Democrat, had surgery today to address bleeding that was occurring in his brain–the result of a congenital condition.
I certainly hope that he has a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with he and his family at this time.
The media, however, have a different perspective. They are already speculating as to what will happen if Sen. Johnson either becomes incapacitated or doesn’t survive. Here are a sample of the headlines in my RSS reader throughout the day:
CBS: “Life And Power In The Balance”
Yahoo: “Control of Senate at Issue As Sen. Johnson Undergoes Brain Surgery”
AP: “Johnson’s illness threatens Dems’ power”
AP: “GOP governor could name new senator”
AFP: “Ailing Democrat threatens party’s control of US Senate”
Reuters: “Key Sen. Johnson in critical condition”
CNN: “Democrat control hangs on ill senator”
What is wrong with people these days? All they can think about is the potential shift in power when the key detail when that is so inconsequential.
His surgery went well, according to doctors. Now all we can hope for is the best. Who the hell cares about power? I care about Tim Johnson surviving and being with his family.
So should the media.
