Well, it’s been a busy post-Thanksgiving week for a lot of would-be Presidential candidates in 2008. Let’s recap…
Current Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R)? He’s out. He’s not running and that’s probablyt he smartest decision he’s made in a while considering he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in being elected President.
Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack (D)? He’s in. Sadly, he doesn’t realize that he’s got about the came chance as Frist. This sounds dumb, but it’s 100% true: Americans won’t elect a man whose name they cannot spell correctly on the first try.
Indiana Senator Evan Bayh (D)? He’s likely in. He’s setting up an exploratory committee to raise money and review his options. If I had to guess, I’d say he was in…even though, like Vilsack, his chances aren’t particularly good.
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (D)? He can’t make up his mind. He’s postponed his decision on whether he’s running or not. His “botched joke” is being cited as the reason why he’s postponing his decision, but he’s not sure he’s got support within the party anymore. The Democrats don’t often look favorably upon “losers” when it comes to Presidential elections. Kerry’s putting it off because the party doesn’t want him getting in someone’s way.
That someone is Senator Voldemort.
She’s supposdely reaching out to colleagues, but she’s already made her decision. She made it long before she ever ran for the Senate in 2000.
All this has happened in the wake of the Mid-Term Elections but it’s still way too early for any of this. People don’t care about Presidential politics right now and, honestly, I don’t blame them. People who announce this early need do so in an effort to drum up some kind of support. Any kind of support.
Vilsack and Bayh can’t compete with Voldy and if they don’t know it yet, they will soon enough. They might as well be running for the number two spot. You know…kind of like John Edwards did in 2004.
Bottom line is this: no one cares, guys. Talk to us in another year.
