In an interview today with Examiner.com, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney set himself apart from the two presumptive GOP front-runners in the race for the Presidency.
Speaking of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Romney put his Conservatism front and center:
“We’re in a different place on immigration; we’re in a different place on campaign reform; we’re in a different place on same-sex marriage; we’re in a different place on the president’s policy on interrogation of detainees,” Romney said.
…
“I’m a conservative Republican, there’s no question about that,” he said. “I’m at a different place than the other two.”
…and Romney is exactly right. I believe that Romney would make a great President, but I’m skeptical at his ability to make it past Super Tuesday. I don’t know that the rest of the country–outside New England, that is–is ready for a Mormon President.
However, Giuliani and McCain are moderate Republicans and while it’s too early to be talking about front-runners in the race for 2008, those two have the most name recognition. Romney will have to do a lot of work to overcome that.
This…was the first step.
Go, Mitt, Go.
