From MSNBC.com:
Hollywood may have to tone down its portrayal of the military’s screaming, in-your-face boot camp drill sergeant.
In today’s Army, shouting is out and a calmer approach to molding young minds is in, says the head of Pentagon personnel.
The Army says it has reduced by nearly 7 percent the number of recruits who wash out in the first six to 12 months of military life.
[BEGIN SARCASM] Right…why train with fear-based tactics? It’s not like these guys are going to war to be shot at anytime soon. [END SARCASM]
I understand that the Army is looking to retain more people who enlist and keep them from washing out, but I find myself asking if the ones who can’t handle being yelled at by a D.I. are people we really want in the Army in the first place. I mean, I’ve never served, but isn’t that one of the goals of basic training–to weed out the people who really ought not be there in the first place?
I think people are taking this “kinder and gentler” thing a bit too far.
As Rush Limbaugh would observe, our armed forces have two functions: to kill people and break things. I have to think that, in order to do those two things, you ought to be able to take some yelling. Call me crazy.
