Think we’re not any safer at home? Think that the people guarding our nation against terror threats are inept?
Think again.
Here’s an email from a regular reader of the site that will give you some food for thought…
Had an interesting thing happen at my work yesterday which I thought might be something you could mention on your site, to show how serious our law enformcement officials are taking the war on terrorism.
At around 11:00 yesterday I was working at my desk and her my boss say “Holy S***!” while looking out the window to the main parking lot of my office. I got up and looked out, and right in front of our window was a white van, surrounded by at least 15 police officers. Every officer had a weapon pointed at the van, ranging from 9mm’s, to shotguns to M16′s. A man got out of the van and was quickly cuffed, searched and whisked away. The remaining officers kept their weapons trained on the van, as the windows were dark and it was unknown if anyone else was in the van, or what cargo it was carrying.
During the entire process we were (stupidly) watching through the window, albeit from a distance. After about 10 minutes a local police officer came up to the door and was let in. He advised everyone to evacuate the building to the rear immediately. Everyone in our office quickly exited. After about 45 minutes we were given the all clear and allowed to return to work. When I came back inside, the van was gone.
Here is the scoop… There is an Air Force Recruitment Center right across the street. Apparently there was information that a delivery van was going to be making a delivery to this particular location without authorization. There were two problems with this delivery:
1. Only approved delivery companies can make deliveries to government buildings.
2. The delivery company was actually ‘banned’ from making any deliveries to Federal buildings.
It turns out that it was miscommunication that this van was a subcontractor of the delivery company and the proper procedures were not followed for the delivery. BUT, and I think this is a very important point, the response was immediate and clear when all those cruisers forced the van into our parking lot and aimed all weapons at it. Law Enformcement is doing what they are supposed to be doing! Protecting US! Making sure that any intelligence they have on suspicious activities is followed up on. I was thrilled to see how the local police, state police and other law enforcement reacted to this incident. You would think this kind of response would be seen in big cities like Boston, LA, NY etc, but here in rural Maine??? It was amazing to witness!!!
The van was not much smaller than the vehicle that McVeigh used when he struck Oklahoma City. If this van was packed with explosives and the target was hit, I would not be typing this to you now.
I am grateful that we have a plan in motion to combat terrorism in this country. We have a President who is not deterred by those left wing fanatics who say his plan is failing. Thankfully it was a ‘false alarm’, but if it wasn’t, who know how many lives could have been saved by the people that put their lives on the line every day to protect us.
God Bless Them ALL!!!!
Amen to that! Our military and law enforcement personnel are incredible folks who are willing to put themselves in harm’s way on our behalf and they do an amazing job everyday.
