Here’s a Question for You…

If the 1965 Voting Rights Act is such “important legislation” as the President told the NAACP today, then why does it have an expiration date?!?!
Yahoo! News | Senate renews 1965 Voting Rights Act

The 1965 Voting Rights Act, which opened voting booths to millions of black Americans, won a 25-year extension from Congress Thursday as Republicans sought to improve their standing with minorities before the fall election.

“The Voting Rights Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation in our nation’s history,” Bush said in a statement. “It has been vital to guaranteeing the right to vote for generations of Americans and has helped millions of our citizens enjoy the full promise of freedom.”

A centerpiece of the 1960s civil rights movement, the law ended poll taxes, literacy tests and other election devices that had been used for decades to keep blacks from voting.

Now, I’m not contesting that the Voting Rights Act is bad law, nor am I arguing that it should be renewed. My point is, if this is such important legislation–and it is–then why hasn’t the Constitution been amended?? Obviously, no one wants to re-enact poll taxes or literary tests or keep anyone from voting, regardless of what the überLibs would have you believe.
The vote was the right thing to do, but it’s time to make this a more permanent thing. We shouldn’t need to see a vote on this 25 years from now or ever again.
