Friends, today is a banner day. Today, another tax cut was given to the American people allowing us to keep even more of our own money!
The problem? Well, it only took Congress 108 years to repeal it. Yes…one hundred eight years.
Back in 1898, Congress enacted a tax on telephones to help pay for the Spanish-American War. Telephones were considered a luxury item back then and they were taxed to help offset the military spending that was necessary to fight the war. Unfortunateliy, we’ve been paying it ever since.
Approximately $15 billion will be refunded to taxpayers starting on 2006 tax returns. That’s $15 billion of our money that’s coming back to us. That’s good news any day of the week. The Government doesn’t need any more of my money than it already receives, thanks.
I don’t know if it’s ever happened or not, but has a tax ever really been repealed? Has the Government ever done away with a tax like this before? I’m going to have to research this one…
