The Census Bureau released 2005 data showing the average total taxes per state, per capita. (That’s per person for those of you not sure.)
The state that tops the list? Vermont, with an average total tax of $3,600/person. Wow.

I have to stop and wonder if this is directly related to the management of former Vermont Governor Howard Dean. (Dean held the top office in Vermont from 1991-2003 and is now the chair of the Democrat National Committee.) Granted, the Census Bureau web page doesn’t say what taxes make up the number. However, “total tax” sound pretty self explanatory.
Numbers don’t lie and, in hindsight, I’m really glad he didn’t win his party’s nomination or the White House. Especially if the numbers in his home state are any indication.
