Greetings, friends! I return to you slightly under the weather and a bit weary of watching DVDs in my convalescence. Well, I must confess, I’m FINALLY watching season 7 of Star Trek: Voyager. There’s a reason I stopped watching this show. It’s just painful. I mean, they cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise after four years and that show was GOOD! How could they let Voyager go on for SEVEN??
Anyway, I hit “pause” long enough to know there’s a lot going on today.
First, Samuel Alito was confirmed and sworn in today as the nation’s 110th Supreme Court justice. You know, it’s about time.
Even John Kerry’s half-hearted attempt to block the confirmation didn’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell. I mean, first, it would have been nice if Kerry had actually been IN the United States. No–that was too simple. He had to fly back from Switzerland in dramatic fashion to try to engage in a filibuster he never had the votes for. In fact, the Senate voted 72-25 to end the debate and move the nomination to a vote. A mere 24 Democrats (out of 44) voted to continue debate indefinitely and create a filibuster.
Twenty-four. Nice job, John.
Second, tonight is the annual State of the Union Address by the President. I don’t often look forward to SOTU, but this one should be interesting to me on two fronts. In tonight’s address, the President will state that America is “addicted to oil.” That’s an interesting comment, even if just at face value.
The other interesting development is that war protestor Cindy Sheehan will be in the gallery tonight at the State of the Union. Sheehan, the guest of California Congresswoman Lynn Woosley, is expected to be respectful and listen to the speech as an invited guest. I wish I knew what the over/under was for how many times the cameras will cut to her when Bush is speaking. I’m going to make an initial guess of 7. We’ll see how I do.
Lastly, Coretta Scott King died today. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue has ordered flags at all state buildings to be flown at half mast until the funeral. Mrs. King carried on the legacy of her husband–probably moreso than a lot of individuals who claim they have. May she rest in peace…
