Random Thoughts on the Presidential Address…

Here are some things that struck me during the President’s televised address tonight…

  • Do you suppose the President needs a bathroom break at all during this?
  • Brian Williams is the only major network news anchor on the ground in NOLA. This is why NBC is light years ahead of anyone else in television news coverage.
  • What the President is describing sounds incredible–I don’t think there’s ever been a government effort like this.
  • How are we paying for this?? Is this a recycled FDR or LBJ speech??
  • I understand that we need to rebuild NOLA…but WHY are we rebuilding a city that’s just going to flood again?!?!? HELLO!?!??!?
  • This was a good speech, and probably one of the better ones that W has delivered from behind a podium.
  • The Gulf Opportunity Zone idea is a great start. I like the incentives and I like the tax breaks. The pro-entrepreneur spirit is the best way to go.
  • Worker Recovery Accounts? So…we’re just going to GIVE people $5,000?? You’re kidding, right?
  • Urban Homesteading Act…so…a lottery for government provided-land? I can see how this goes…the Government seizes land in NOLA and the Gulf region through eminent domain and then waits until it’s safe to hand it out to other people? I don’t like that idea at all.
  • “Lower than the water around it is not easy.” No kidding? I’m glad he explained what “below sea level” means.
  • Wait a second, Bush is saying the Government and Military need more power in the times of emergencies like these? OK…I can accept that, but why isn’t anyone talking about what the Mayor of NOLA and the Governor of Louisiana did wrong!?!?
  • Oh, boy…he mentioned God. I can’t wait to hear the Libs bitch about that.
  • “We will live to see the second line?” Oh boy. The hooks in this speech are just dreadful. Delivery good (for once), speech bad.
  • “We’re just not accustomed to hearing this President admit mistakes…take this kind of responsibility when facing criticism…” That was David Gregory of NBC news…I’m so glad he left his bias at the door.
  • I popped over to cable when coverage by the major networks ended, and…I should have stuck with “Scrubs” on NBC.
  • Joe Scarborough has brought up a good point: If you’re from Louisiana, this speech goes over really well, but if you’re in 48 other states, maybe not.
  • The thing that strikes me the most about the coverage of this speech is that the general tone of the talking heads is “it sounds nice, but he didn’t ___________.”
In the blank you can insert: “he didn’t talk about health care.” Or maybe even, “he didn’t talk about education.” They even could go with, “he didn’t say how he was going to heal the racial divide.” No matter what George Bush said in this speech, the Libs were going to point out that it wasn’t enough.
Forget that Bush gave a speech that any normal Liberal would salivate to deliver. These guys can’t stand that he gave a speech with compassion AND that contained a mea culpa. Bush used the power of his office to look…GASP!…Presidential. How dare he?? Puh-leeze.
The vision is grand and it was delivered with compassion. This speech wasn’t meant to address every outstanding question that’s tied to this disaster. It was meant to address the needs of those affected by the hurricane and to call all Americans to action in helping, and I don’t think it could have gone any better.
