The thing that strikes me the most about the coverage of this speech is that the general tone of the talking heads is “it sounds nice, but he didn’t ___________.”
In the blank you can insert: “he didn’t talk about health care.” Or maybe even, “he didn’t talk about education.” They even could go with, “he didn’t say how he was going to heal the racial divide.” No matter what George Bush said in this speech, the Libs were going to point out that it wasn’t enough.

Equal Justice Under Law…
So, the hearings to confirm John Roberts as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court have begun.
I have to go on the record as having a problem with Roberts. I don’t think he’s earned the nomination. He’s the “new guy,” for cryin’ out loud. There are other people who’ve been serving the Court notably and honorably for years and this strikes me as a slap in the face to them. Were I President—which would be horrible for all of you, but pretty cool for me—I’d select Antonin Scalia. I’m not the President, though, and the guy we’ve got says that Roberts is the right person for the job.

Damn Those Racist Hurricanes!…
I heard a statistic the other day that I found fascinating. I can’t remember where I heard it, but even at face value, I think it bears repeating.
Since we’ve begun tracking hurricanes and categorizing them, only five Category 5 hurricanes have ever hit the mainland United States. That’s it. Five. In fact, of the top ten deadliest hurricanes to hit the mainland on record, only one of them occurred after 1950.
