An Example of Why I Hate the United Nations…

When there is a disaster somewhere in the world–like the earthquake and ensuing tsunami that devastated nine countries in Asia over the Christmas holiday–the United States is always the first to respond. We offer help. We offer money. We offer volunteers. More often than not, the United States of America leads the world in humanitarian efforts. Natural disasters. Disease. Armed conflict. We’re the first to step up and we bring the world with us.
That apparently isn’t good enough for Jan Egeland.
Who’s that? Jan Egeland’s pathetic existence involves standing in front of television cameras and asking other nations for money. His official title is “Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator,” but I prefer to think of him as “Spineless, Money-Extorting Bastard.”

Dispatches From the Desert, #1…

My friends, we are indeed fortunate to have a dear friend of mine guest blogging from Iraq.
A citizen soldier in our Air National Guard, Julia Layton has been deployed on active duty somewhere in Iraq and has graciously agreed to share her thoughts with us occasionally on these pages whenever she has the ability and the time to do so.
In addition to the titles of Mother, Soldier and Patriot, Julia now adds to her resume the designation as “ConBlog’s Official Iraqi Information Ministratrix.” Please join me in welcoming her to our forum and in thanking her for her selfless service in defense of all of us and of the United States of America.

Conspiracy Theory…

Did you catch the remarks made by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld last week? There were two quotes that were notable. One quote was widely reported by the MSM (that’s Media Spin Machine, for those of you not sure), and one was not.
Here’s the one that was reported. It occurred at a DoD Operational Update Briefing with the press at the Pentagon on December 22:
“I am truly saddened by the thought that anyone could have the impression that I or others here are doing anything other than working urgently to see that the lives of the fighting men and women are protected and are cared for in every way humanly possible. And I hope and pray that every family member of those who have died so bravely knows how deeply I feel their loss…”

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year…

I absolutely love the Christmas season. I really do. The lights. The music. The decorations. The cheesy television specials that play from Thanksgiving all the way up through Christmas. I like to spend Christmas Eve with all the Christmas lights on watching my favorite movies: White Christmas, A Christmas Story, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and, finally, I end the evening with It’s a Wonderful Life.
This is just one of the ways in which I carry on the traditions that I like to celebrate at Christmas time. There are still things my family does every year at Christmas time that I’m sure I’ll do with my own family someday.
I can tell you this, though. Some of the things that my family has been doing to celebrate the holidays may actually pre-date Kwanzaa.

You Are Now Entering the B.S. Zone…

This has been a pretty significant couple of weeks in the world of the MSM. (Some people call that Main Stream Media, but I like to call it the Media Spin Machine, thanks.) Yesterday, NBC’s Tom Brokaw signed off Nightly News for the last time and handed the reins of the Peacock’s flagship broadcast over to Brian Williams.
Days before, CBS announced the retirement of their managing editor and anchor of the CBS Evening News, Dan Rather. As you will recall, Rather had been embroiled in the fake National Guard memo scandal that was related to a 60 Minutes report on President George W. Bush. The authenticity of the memos came into question when just about everyone in the world realized the documents were printed in Microsoft Word moments before the CBS cameras started rolling.
The announcement of Rather’s retirement has been taken up by many columnists, including FOX News’ Bill O’Reilly.
