From the Mailbag…

So, in the course of checking the Official Email Inbox of the ConBlogger, I stumbled across a piece of feedback. This email took the time to comment on the last ConBlog regarding New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey. The writer was my younger sister, Neddie.
Now, keeping nepotism out of this, I have to say her email was the best piece of feedback that I received on the issue.
Let me give you a little bit of background on my sister. Well, the first thing I should tell you is that her name isn’t Neddie. That’s just what I call her, and it’s a reference from the movie “Three Amigos.” (Long story and one best saved for a beer someday, trust me.) She loves her family and her country. She believes in a strong national defense, but she also believes that it should be used when other avenues have failed. My sister is also the single funniest human being I have ever known. When it comes to politics, I’d have to describe her as an Independent. I may not be able to tell where she stands on every issue, but I can tell you that she’s been my closest and best friend her whole life.
Her email is…well…it’s a chip off the old ConBlog–that’s what it is. She goes off on a mini-rant in her brief email that makes her big brother proud. I love her email and I value what she had to say:

Name: Neddie

Comments: I’d like to take a moment and remember the little people…the “STRAIGHT AMERICANS…” who are proud of their non-crookedness first, and their country second. “We The People…” wasn’t singling out heteros from homos… (I can say that cause I am a freakin’ homo). I heard the speech: “My truth is is that I am a gay American and I am blessed to live in the greatest nation with the greatest tradition of civil liberties in the world…”

The real truth reads like this: “My truth is that you caught me, I’m queer and I couldn’t hide it anymore…not from my wife, who’s tolerated it for years cause she didn’t want anyone to know she got bamboozled and I paid her money to stand next to me tonight; and not from the State of New Jersey, who has caught me in every bath house from here to New York. I am blessed to live in the greatest gay nation with the greatest gay tradition of gay CIVIL liberties in the world.”

So what’s next for “Big Mac?”

Next months cover of “The Advocate…”

An interview with Barbara Walters…

…and the Grand Marshall at New Jersey’s 2005 Gay Pride Parade…yippee.

He’s Here, He’s Queer, WHO CARES?!?!?!!

And now you’ve read the other salient point about Neddie: she’s also a lesbian. I’m proud of her for having the courage to be who she is. I’ve learned a lot from her over the past few years–about both of us. Now, while her disclosure of being a “freakin’ homo” isn’t the important part of her email, it is certainly relevant.
What is relevant about her email is that McGreevey is attempting to wrap himself in a rainbow-colored flag to deflect the criticism of scandal and wrongdoing. She’s right. He couldn’t hide it anymore. He couldn’t squash this because of the pending legal action and what would have been leaked to the press. Pretty soon, it would have been on every Editor’s desk in the Tri-State area and no one was going to “spike” that story.
So…what does the Governor do? He tries to beat them to the punch by telling the world himself in a statement that seems like it could have been taken out of an Aaron Sorkin script.
That’s practically the next phase of this, too. The celebrity. Neddie’s right…he’ll probably get the cover of “The Advocate.” Maybe an interview or two with Barbara Walters, Oprah, or Katie Couric. He’ll probably even be the Grand Marshall at several Gay Pride Parades. Don’t forget the book deal. There will be one of those, too, and he’ll get a huge advance. After that comes speaking engagements and who knows what else?
None of the appearances will touch on the fact that Mr. McGreevey is under some intense scrutiny for some not-so-good reasons.
These were all things I didn’t think of when I wrote the original blog. Neddie gave me something else to think about on this topic and her perspective is great. The big brother in me would like to say that it’s partly my doing, but no. It’s all her. She’s a smart cookie. Neddie’s good. (Of course I’m biased…but c’mon…I’m right.)
I love my little sister. Maybe she should start her own blog. ;)
